Frequently Asked Questions
· Can adults learn?
Yes, but they have to enrol on the Open Division form which is for anyone who is Year 9 at school and above which includes all adults. This is the self-funding part of our music classes and so is priced differently.
· Can pupils change half-way through the year?
Normally no, as our programme is designed to begin in February and end in December.
· Can I learn two Instruments?
Yes, if the pupil can manage this. Some pupils take Singing or Theory along with an instrument. Rarely, some learn two instruments which adds to the expense especially if hiring the instruments. We aim to accommodate both lessons into the timetabling of classes.
· What happens if the music lesson clashes with sport?
If you know what time sport will be on, you can write on the enrolment form that you prefer an early lesson, or a later lesson. We do our best to timetable pupils’ needs. If classes are missed, pupils will need to practice more at home and attend when sport is cancelled or ended.
· How long does it take to be good enough to join an orchestra or band?
Our Symphonic Band (for wind players) and Training Orchestra (for string players) are both designed to take in players after one year of learning. The music is designed to be manageable for pupils to join in their second year of learning. This means they have a lesson as well as play in a group.
· Which SMMC centre is best?
Choosing the centre depends on proximity and choice of instrument. Most people choose the centre closest to their home, or the one that provides the instrument they want, such as ukulele which is only taught at Bathgate, or oboe which is only taught at George St.
