The largest and lowest-pitched string instrument in the modern symphony orchestra, with a rich, deep tone. It is an important instrument in ensembles, playing the lowest line of music, and works equally well in classical and jazz settings.
Double bass is more suited to a high school or adult learner due to its size.
Prior experience on any string instrument (violin, cello etc.) will be useful, as will any other playing experience.
