The trumpet is a member of the brass family, and is most commonly played in classical and jazz music, but can be used in many other genres of music. It is the smallest member of the brass family, and because of this can play the highest notes.
Prior experience on another musical instrument, such as the recorder, and the ability to read music is useful, but not essential.
